Chapter 23

I went to Jai’s kitchen to help him with the dishes. I picked up a pair of gloves. “Let me do that.”

“Little Monster, it’s alright. I can manage on my own,” my best friend said when we were alone in his spotless kitchen.

“Oh, come on, Fellow Monster, I know how much you hate washing the dishes,” I said, putting on an apron he handed me.

I rinsed the dishes, and Jai placed them neatly on the rack.

“Thank you for arranging this meeting. I was feeling discouraged about fighting back earlier, but now, my motivation is back.”

Jai shook his head. “I can’t take any credit for that. Rory, Madison, and Aiden did everything.” He sighed. “I just listened mutely as usual. You know that I find it hard to speak with strangers.”

“But you stopped me from bringing up Pete’s social media post. I thought everyone else would know about that, but I was surprised—”

Jai raised his voice. “It’s illegal to upload assault footage in public.” He added in an even tone, “It was reported to the police earlier today.”

“Who reported it?” I asked.

Jai wiped his hands on his apron and showed me the social media posts on his phone.

@aasquad

10:17 AM

Hi Strollfield Police @stfPolice, we are reporting an illegal and offensive sexual assault video uploaded on social media this morning by Pete Hilton, a law student at Strollfield Law School and newly appointed brand ambassador of Strollfield University. We request you take necessary action against the perpetrator. Thank you.

Thank you @aasquad. It’s commendable that you did the right thing. It’s indeed illegal to upload such content in public. We will take care of it.

“Oh wow, aren’t they the same people who validated my post earlier using digital forensics? The one with the interview with Ina?” I asked.

Jai nodded.

“Interesting. So, are you a part of the squad too?”

Jai looked at me, surprised. “How did you decipher that?”

“Because you’re awesome.” I pointed at his phone. “And these are direct messages to the Strollfield Police. They aren’t public and no one else can see them. This means you need to be logged in as aasquad. That’s only possible if you’re a member. Elementary, my dear Jai.”

Jai laughed. “That’s great detective work. Would you like to join us? I’ve been meaning to ask you, but you already have so much going on.”

“Tell me more about the squad.”

“What did you wish for the most when you were outcast for no fault of yours?” Jai asked.

I giggled. “You sound like Dr. Kim, my therapist. She always answers my question with a question.”

Jai smiled. “That was the question AA asked me when I asked her what the squad does.”

“AA? Is that the founder’s name?”

“Well, she goes by AA. None of us have ever seen her. She attends all meetings on the phone,” Jai replied. “So, answer my question: what did you wish for the most when you were out cast for no fault of yours?”

“For someone to be on my side and support my fight against the abusers,” I said.
